[KETTERING, OH, 12/10/18] – The Modern is proud to be competing in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition for the fifth consecutive year. Students will gain valuable experience in strategic marketing as they create a full marketing plan for the competition’s sponsor: Wienerschnitzel.

Each year The Modern has competed in the District Five competition, the student team has ranked in either first or second place and won the “Best Creative” award. Additionally, the team has won “Best Presenters.” Other competitors in the district include the University of Kentucky, Miami University, Youngstown State University, and Marshall University. District Five’s competition will be held in Louisville on April 6, 2019. District winners from across the country will be narrowed down to compete nationally in Hollywood, Florida, in June.

The following students have been selected to participate in the competition: Scarlett Alt, Terrance Auster, Abby Beneke, Jeremy Benis, Shayla Bertke, Aaron Clauss, Tyler Daviaux, Logan Hill, Abby Lands, Margaret McCartney, Shelby Miller, Owen Rendel, Adam Richardson, Laura Rossiter, Rachel Ruth, Jacob Shook, Rachael Shurte, Carly Vagedes, Angelica Weimer, and Anthony Weir.

Instructors Molly Baker and Andy Sharpe are co-advisers. Baker has managed marketing campaigns for a Fortune 100 company and has extensive experience in brand marketing, print advertising, and strategic planning. Sharpe has worked as an art director and senior designer in both web and print design, guiding the creative direction of campaigns, brand identities, video, and web. He has earned many American Advertising Federation awards. “The Modern is proud to have such a strong group of students, and experienced advisers, representing the college,“ stated Jessica Barry, president of The Modern. “NSAC gives our students an opportunity to have hands-on industry experience by allowing them to work on a strategic marketing plan for a national brand.”
