The Modern College of Design’s 2018-2019 academic year commences Monday, August 20. The college continues its strong enrollment trend with over 200 students starting classes this year. Since 2012, the college has nearly doubled its enrollment.
This year’s incoming class is the most ethnically diverse and highest achieving class in The Modern’s 35-year history with an average GPA of 3.2. Compared to the prior year, the percentage of out-of-state students grew from 9% to 13%. With 70% of students moving to Kettering to attend The Modern, the college is working to identify a site for on-campus student housing.
The Modern has welcomed 17 new faculty and staff this year. Ten faculty members joined The Modern with global expertise in branding, user interface/user experience design, video, and motion design. Seven staff members were added in newly created roles to further support student success and maintenance of the expanded campus. The Modern’s recruitment of expert faculty and staff reinforces the college’s commitment to increase enrollment and attract a diverse student population to Kettering.
“The first day of classes is always filled with promise for a successful year,” states Jessica Barry, president of The Modern College of Design. “This year is particularly exciting, because we begin as The Modern College of Design. Moving ahead, we expect to continue growing student enrollment and sustaining our 3-year average job placement rate of 93-100%.”
A campus addition of 23,000 square feet is complete, and students will study, connect, and grow in new spaces that include a large common area, student lounge, expanded library, and state-of-the-art photography and video studio.
The two-year design college is continuing to pursue a Bachelor’s degree completion program in design leadership. This program will provide students with increased options for advancement in their professional careers.
The Modern anticipates a very successful year as it continues to educate the next generation of design leaders.
