a safe and supportive environment

The Modern College of Design is committed to providing an inclusive, safe, and supportive educational environment for students, faculty, and staff. The Modern provides accommodations to all qualified students with disabilities upon request. The Modern’s policy adheres to relevant federal regulations as listed in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (amended in 2008), Title IX of the Federal Education Amendments of 1972, and Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Notice of Non-Discrimination

The Modern College of Design does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, creed, color, sex, gender identity and expression, disability, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, military status, veteran status, familial status, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable local, state or federal law, ordinance, or regulation in its programs and activities. The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding The Modern’s non-discrimination policies: Shayna Thomas, Director of Campus Operations and Civil Rights Coordinator.

Provision of Reasonable Accommodation(s) for Education Programs, Activities, and Other Services

It is the policy of The Modern College of Design not to discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities and to provide reasonable accommodation(s), as required by law, to otherwise qualified applicants for admission of students with disabilities in all education programs, activities, services, and practices, including application procedures, admission, student projects, course projects, the awarding of degrees, discipline, and dismissal. Educational opportunities will not be denied to an otherwise qualified applicant or student because of the need to make reasonable accommodation(s) or modification(s) for the physical or mental impairments of any such individual.

Although this policy and procedure are described mainly in terms of accommodations that may allow an applicant or student with a disability to meet the academic standards requisite to admission or participation in education programs, activities, and services, the policy is also applicable to accommodations involving the application process and to accommodations that would enable an applicant or student with a disability to enjoy equal benefits and privileges of education as are enjoyed by other similarly situated applicants or students without disabilities. The procedures contained herein are not exclusive of other education-related inquiries that the college, in its discretion, may make as permitted or required by local, state, or federal law and in conformance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

To receive any special service or accommodation, the student must contact the Director of Student Services at The Modern to initiate the process. The form can also be downloaded here. Students seeking accommodations must also supply supporting documentation from a treatment professional. Requests for accommodations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and accommodations will be granted according to the criteria described on the Disabilities Disclosure and Accommodations Request  Form.

An Accommodation Plan will be created based on the information supplied with the Request Form. The Director will schedule a meeting with the student to explain their Accommodation Plan and how it can be utilized. The Accommodation Plan will then be distributed to instructors so that they can provide the approved accommodations. If students' needs change, they must inform The Modern as soon as possible. All information regarding a student’s disability and Accommodation Plan is confidential, and is only shared with faculty and staff members on a need-to-know basis.
