Students, alumni, and staff participated in the first annual We Care Arts Art Scramble on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Fairfield Commons Mall in Beavercreek, Ohio.

We Care Arts, located in the heart of Kettering, Ohio, believes in the healing power of creating and producing art that transforms physical, developmental, and mental challenges into a future rich with possibility. For 38 years, they have positively impacted individuals with varying disabilities and physical challenges.

We Care Arts is also one of The Modern’s employer partners, providing opportunities for students to gain professional experience through The Modern’s Externship Program. Student Micah Hermiller completed an externship with We Care Arts in May of 2023 and created the logo for the event.

Eight creative teams participated in the Art Scramble, including a team from Bochrath Flooring and Rugs led by 2023 Modern alum Jaxon Eggleston. After graduating from The Modern’s Design Leadership Program in June of 2023, Jaxon transitioned from intern to full-time Marketing and Media Director with Bochrath, where he gives back to the local community.

Each team made a unique creation over two hours using various art supplies and household items and presented their concepts to judges. President Jessica Barry served as a judge alongside Kettering City Mayor Peggy Lehner and WHIO-TV Reporter/Anchor Anchor Xavier Hershovitz.

The judges selected two finalists who now vie for first place through an online competition. We Care Arts will announce the winners on WKEF’s Good Day Dayton on Friday, August 18.

“We admire We Care Arts for their dedication to improving lives through the arts,” shared President Jessica Barry. “We appreciate our partnership and the opportunities they provide for our students, alums, and staff.”
