Meet Chris and Devin, graduates of The Modern in 2014. After their graduation, they settled in Columbus, OH. Initially, they pursued careers in Graphic Design, but soon they wanted to go beyond creating aesthetically pleasing designs. They aspired to be “the builders instead of just the creators.”

Chris found himself working at IBM, where he recognized the need to expand his knowledge and push the boundaries of the design industry. At IBM, he tackled intricate problems and revamped outdated software systems for large corporations. Chris thrived in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with clients on short-term projects before moving on to the next one. In 2022, he transitioned to a role at JP Morgan, bringing him greater consistency in his work. He discovered that by designing effective processes for one company, he could adapt and apply them to other companies facing similar software challenges.

While living in Columbus, Devin worked as a Web Designer at Bonfire Red before transitioning into a Product Design role at Root Insurance and Upstart. However, she soon realized she wanted to take a different path in her design career. Because of their prior experience, both Chris and Devin had knowledge of the fundamentals of UI/UX. They knew they could make this career shift and stay in the design industry they love.

Devin always had a deep love of gaming and started exploring PC gaming during the pandemic as a hobby she and Chris could share together. In August 2022, Devin applied for a User Experience Designer position at Riot Games in Los Angeles. After a rigorous interview process spanning several months and multiple rounds, Riot Games extended an offer to Devin to join the Esports team in November 2022. Seizing this exciting opportunity, Chris and Devin sold their home in Columbus, packed their belongings, and embarked on a cross-country move to Los Angeles in preparation for this new and exciting opportunity.

Riot Games, renowned for its popular games like League of Legends and Valorant, is a prominent player in the gaming industry. Devin is getting to solve interesting problems with a user empathy-driving approach due to Riot’s focus on “putting the player first.” Riot Games fosters employee engagement, offering programs that promote inclusivity and work-life balance. Devin is loving her new position and is excited about her future opportunities!
